This week’s featured releases come from Kikkawa You and Tokyo Girls’ Style.
Kikkawa You – “Hana“
Kikkawa You…Yuu…Yu…whatever, she doesn’t release singles that often okay? Some of you might even be okay with that if you had to suffer through the SmileR phase of her career. Well she’s back with a new song that they’re promoting as “The longest idol song ever”. It clocks in at an impressive seventeen and a half minutes and is split into three movements, but I’m not sure how legitimate (who would even check?) their claim is. Oh well, it’s good marketing and it’s certainly something different. I hope there’s a seventeen minute music video so I can listen to Dave complain about it on a podcast.
Tokyo Girls’ Style – “1st BEST ALBUM [Kirari☆]“
Tokyo Girls’ Style have gone to some serious lengths to distance themselves from the term “idol” in recent months. Being an “artist” is what’s cool these days I guess, I’m old. Well TGS can say all they want but if there’s money to be made then dammit we’re putting out a Best Of “idol” album! All of your favorites are here, along with music videos and live performances. It’s actually a pretty nice package and a cool way to celebrate their fifth anniversary. I guess if we’re bookending a phase of a group’s career then this is the right way to go about it.
ALSO THIS WEEK:
“Koeteke Everything” by ALLOVER
“Kiss Dake de Sayonara Shite Ageru” by Asobit☆Girls
So yeah, pretty slow week on the release front. I think it’s Golden Week in Japan or something like that. We’ll make up for it next week though so until next time.
If you missed any of the last few weeks’ worth of new music you can check out past editions of This Week in Music here.
