On their latest jam, Tokyo Girls’ Style takes things to the forest for some pastoral spring looks. Dancing amid the trees and picnicking in the meadows, the four girls look the part of purity in these days before the solstice. When the scene shifts indoors, Tokyo Girls’ Style get a bit darker, perhaps play too much. Dark tones on the wood floors and aggressively shadowed sets add a look of uncomfortable voyeurism to “kiss wa agenai”. The piano intro that plays a jazzy accompaniment to the verses eventually blows up into a dancey chorus matched to the mid-tempo arrangement. The sound of Tokyo Girls’ Style’s “kiss wa agenai” plays unique in the idol world: touched with throwback synth leads, filled with organic sounds, and understated in most ways. Tokyo Girls’ Style’s 25th single goes on sale June 20, 2018.
