Before the paint dries, it’s time to unpack the funk grooves of Tokyo Girls’ Style’s 24th single. In a bit of a return, TGS turn to their funky roots for “Last Romance”, although nothing is quite the same as it was. The sound palette for this latest release eschews the crispy rhythm section in favor a fat, round tones (you’ll just have to take a listen to it). The vocals also more immediate with less layering and processing. Visually, the group also takes cues from the group’s past: the sensual dance shot in the abandoned warehouse looks and feels like much of the Tokyo Girls’ Style’s work of 2011 vintage. The latex drip covering the girl’s faces and other objects related to time and (especially) maturity feel provocative, and I’ll leave it to you to decipher any hidden meanings. I also want to bring attention to the pastel blues and purples of the performance outfits: they look great don’t they? “Last Romance” hits the stores on February 28, 2018.
